TC6 - Digitalization
The aim of TC6 is to develop, organise and disseminate fundamental concepts of measurement science that relate to digitalisation and digital transformation in science, industry, and society. The TC promotes the accumulation and curation of knowledge in various forms relating to the digitalisation of measurement methodologies and measurement outcomes. Its purpose is to provide a robust body of knowledge to support digital transformation when measurement is involved.
Digitalisation's multidisciplinary nature is expected to overlap with other IMEKO groups' interests. TC6 thus encourages collaborations and joint activities with other TCs.

TC6 Subcommittee "Software development in metrology"
The TC6 Working Group ‘Software’ provides a technical forum for advancing software as a key enabler of digital metrology and digital transformation. In alignment with TC6’s scope, the WG focuses on interoperable, trustworthy, and reproducible software solutions that support the digital representation, processing, exchange, and use of metrological information—including digital calibration/testing/inspection certificates, remote and automated measurement workflows, data analysis pipelines, and secure digital infrastructures.
The WG’s activities emphasize community-driven knowledge curation and practical guidance: collecting and linking relevant tools, repositories, and publications; consolidating developer-oriented specifications and good practices; and facilitating collaboration and exchange (e.g., surveys and webinars) to accelerate adoption of robust, maintainable solutions across metrology and the wider quality infrastructure.

September 2026 - 1st IMEKO TC6 Symposium
Typical scientific events are aiming at bringing together researchers to present their recent achievements and results. In order to enable a broad spectrum of such presentations and to create a scientific programme that is attractive for the audience, event schedules are packed with upfront presentations. This usually leaves little room for actual in-depth discussions amongst experts.
TC6 is carrying out an experiment called “IMEKO Symposium”. A Symposium is a meeting of experts for exchanging insights, experience and knowledge on a specific topic. Several TC6 Members will come together in September 2026 for this first TC6 Symposium. In a three-days meeting, they will discuss recent developments and future outlook for digital transformation in metrology. The outcome will be the foundation for a joint scientific publication summarising the results of these discussions.
Past events
September 2025 - 2nd M4DConf in Benevento, Italy
From 3 - 5 September 2025, IMEKO TC6 held the second international conference on metrology and digital transformation - the M4DConf 2025. The 2nd edition of the TC6 signature event brought together experts from all around the world to exchange on research in the field of metrology for digital transformation involving national and international institutions and academia in a discussion on the state-of-the-art. With 9 Special Sessions and 72 accepted papers from 265 authors coming from 36 countries of 5 continents, this TC6 event clearly demonstrated the international interest in the topic of digitalization. Three internationally renowned keynote speakers, Prof. Frank Härtig, Dr. Sundeep Bhandari, and Prof. Luca Mari, complemented the scientific program with their digital transformation and metrology expertise.
